Teachers of Color Wanted for Fulbright Teacher Exchange
Full-time teachers are being sought for the Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program, which has helped thousands of teachers contribute to mutual understanding between the United States and countries around the world.
Since 1946, this opportunity has offered teachers a year, semester or six-week direct exchange of teaching positions with a counterpart in another country teaching the same subject at the same level. Fulbright program staff in the U.S. and abroad match U.S. and overseas candidates in the spring of each year. Fulbright staff then proposes matched exchanges that each candidate and each school involved in the application process must approve before final selection to the program takes place.
In addition, U.S. teachers of Latin, Greek, the Classics, Social Studies and other related subjects may be eligible to participate in one of two summer seminars in Italy or Greece.
Sponsored by the United States Department of State, the Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program arranges direct one-to-one classroom exchanges to more than 30 countries for teachers at the elementary, secondary, two-year and four-year college levels. Each year about 400 educators take part in the Fulbright Teacher and Administrator Exchange. U.S. and international exchange teachers continue to be paid by their home institutions while exchanging classrooms, usually for one full academic year. A limited number of semester and shorter-term exchange assignments are also available. Administrators can participate in six-week shadowing experiences in nine different countries.
As the coordinating agency for the Northeast, NESDEC conducts regional conferences for foreign teachers; we also interview New England teachers participating in the program and provide them with an orientation.
In addition, the Fulbright program encourages U.S. schools to host overseas teachers coming on two to four week observational study programs in the United States. U.S. teachers may also apply for observational study programs offered overseas.
The application deadline for direct exchanges is October 15, 2007 for the 2008-2009 academicyear. Interested teachers may use the online application for the regular Teacher Exchange Programs.
For more information about the program, or to request information and/or an application form, call (800) 726-0479 or visit the Fulbright Teacher and Administrator Exchange website at www.fulbrightexchanges.org.
