Achievement First operates a network of 19 public charter schools in New Haven, Bridgeport and Hartford, CT, and Brooklyn, NY. In the 2009-10 academic year, we are serving over 4,500 students in grades K to 12.

Achievement First schools offer a college-preparatory environment in which all students will learn, achieve and go to college. The school day and year are structured to infuse students with a love of learning and to provide them with the academic and character skills necessary to succeed in college and a competitive world.

What Makes Achievement First Schools Great

More time on task: The Achievement First school day and year are longer than traditional public schools. The school day runs from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with tutoring before and after school, and all students attend our mandatory three-week Summer Academy. Over the course of a K to 12 education, this extra time amounts to one additional year of instruction.

Excellent teachers: The primary factor impacting student achievement is teacher quality. At Achievement First,we are committed to ensuring that there is a talented and caring teacher in every classroom. We dedicate significant time and resources to recruiting great teachers from across the country and to providing our teachers with the support and professional development they need to achieve excellence.

Intensive reading program: Achievement First students spend at least three hours each day on reading instruction. Students benefit from whole-class instruction, small-group instruction and a robust independent reading program. Students are also expected to read at home for 20 minutes each night.

Support for struggling students: All students will learn—we accept no excuses. Achievement First students are assessed in the core subjects every six weeks so that struggling students can be identified and receive help before they fall too far behind. Every Achievement First school offers a combination of before- and after-school tutoring, small-group instruction during the school day, and Saturday tutoring to make sure that every student receives the help that he or she needs.

Unwavering college focus: We continuously expose students to college. Beginning in kindergarten, Achievement First students are preparing to go to college. Our classrooms are named after colleges and universities, each grade is identified by the year they will graduate from college, and students make annual field trips to colleges and universities. We aim for a 100 percent college acceptance rate for our high school seniors.

Commitment to character education: All students live by the REACH values (Respect, Enthusiasm, Achievement, Citizenship and Hard Work). Our goal is to develop well-rounded students, and we teach these character values as explicitly as we teach academics.

Palpable love of learning and joy: Achievement First students know that it is “cool” to be smart and that learning is fun. Students are frequently and systematically recognized for academic achievement and good behavior. Students can earn everything from recognition at award ceremonies to trips to bowling alleys, amusement parks and movie theaters.

Team and family atmosphere: Education is a team sport. Academic breakthroughs and high student achievement require teamwork between parents, students and teachers. At Achievement First, students, parents and teachers sign a contract outlining their shared commitment to hard work and consistent support of one another.

Education = Freedom

Blue Valley Schools: Education Beyond Expectations

Welcome to Blue Valley. Located in the greater Kansas City metropolitan area, the Blue Valley School District has a well-established reputation for excellence. Because of our students’ outstanding academic achievements, we are among the top public school districts in the nation.

Blue Valley teachers strive to provide an Education Beyond Expectations and to achieve unprecedented academic success throughout our 33 schools. It is our mission to equip each one of our 21,629 students in grades Pre K -12 to accomplish more than they ever imagined.

We hold ourselves to high standards and it pays off. Our students make us proud year after year. For eight consecutive years now, the district, every Blue Valley school, every grade level and every subgroup has made AYP in accordance with the No Child Left Behind Act and that’s just the beginning of what makes Blue Valley special.

How do we do it? It starts with a sense of connection among colleagues. Part of what makes that possible is a districtwide focus on Professional Learning Communities. Professional Learning Communities enable teachers across grade levels and subject areas to collaborate and learn from each other, fine-tune teaching techniques that will personalize learning for each student and help them maximize their potential.

In Blue Valley, Professional Learning Communities have helped us build a strong team-oriented setting. Teachers work together to answer the following questions as they educate each and every student: What do we want students to learn? How will we know they are learning? What are we going to do if they don’t learn? What do we do if students already know it?

Strategic planning leads to success

Professional Learning Communities have been a feature in Blue Valley’s strategic plan since 2005. This plan has helped us achieve the results we want for teachers, staff and especially for students. Here’s a sampling of some our academic results:

Thirty-six high school seniors from Blue Valley were named National Merit Finalists during the 2009-10 school year.

In 2010 the average composite ACT score districtwide reached an all-time high of 25.

Each Blue Valley high school has been named to Newsweek’s list of America’s top public high schools for the past four years.

Nine Blue Valley schools were recognized with the Governor’s Achievement Award for 2009-10.

Blue Valley Virtues: a vital ingredient for success

The Blue Valley Virtues: respect, responsibility, honesty, perseverance, self-discipline, compassion and courage are a part of who we are. Walk into any school and you will see them in the décor and feel them in the way we treat one another. Our staff and community support character education vigorously through community service projects and volunteer opportunities and we have built it into daily life for students at every level. Blue Valley students begin learning the seven Blue Valley virtues right along with the academic curriculum from the beginning. It’s one more way we support our goal of unparalleled personal growth for every student.

Celebrating diversity

From outstanding academic excellence, to solid character education, to our unwavering commitment to professional development, we have many reasons to celebrate in Blue Valley. Add to this list the many world cultures represented by Blue Valley students and staff: sixty-two languages are spoken across the Blue Valley population. Throughout our school year students, families and staff have daily opportunities to learn and appreciate each one of them. We celebrate diversity in Blue Valley because we know it makes us strong. Diversity helps to create the deep-seated sense of progress and hope that permeates life in Blue Valley. No matter where a student starts or where they want to go, Blue Valley teachers have the tools and the support they need to provide Education Beyond Expectations to each and every one.

The Brockton Public School System is a progressive urban School system with a diverse 15,000+ student population. It is comprised of an experienced and vital teaching staff with 22 schools offering a variety of programs to meet both staff and students’ interests. The school system is growing and improving with an outlook to the successful future of its students.

Brockton High School is a safe, supportive environment that provides 4,300 students with the knowledge, skills, values and behaviors necessary to become responsible and productive members of a diverse society. Instruction focuses on enabling students to demonstrate the literacy skills of reading, writing, speaking and reasoning and preparing them to participate actively as citizens in a technologically advanced society.Brockton High was named one of America’s Best High Schools by the U. S. News & World Report in its annual ranking of the nation’s public schools, published December 10, 2009, the second time in as many years the school has earned the distinction. The highly-regarded weekly magazine analyzed more than 21,000 public schools in 48 states and the District of Columbia, then identified 1,750 for providing the highest quality education for all students, Brockton High School was among the 1,189 schools identified as bronze medal winners.

The six Middle Schools in the city offer safe learning environments that promote academic excellence and social well being for all students grades six to eight. The schools have a shared mission to create a collaborative learning community based on mutual respect and the belief that all students who enter the middle school can and will demonstrate academic progress and personal growth.

The thirteen Elementary schools provide an environment that encourages cooperation and respect. Our four newest schools are state-of-the-art facilities with the latest technology and all the amenities of the 21st century School. The city has its first ever “green school” that utilizes the latest energy-conservation technologies. Connections between home and school are encouraged to benefit the students, the families and the community. The teaching staff is made up of very experienced, capable and enthusiastic professionals.

In addition Brockton has three alternative settings for its students.

The BB Russell Alternative School services students in grades 5-12. It uses a Girls and Boys town Behavior Intervention and “Second Step” decision making curriculum along with a continuation of district curriculum. It offers small class settings, individualized MCAS instruction and Special Education Services.

The Brockton Champion School uses a School to Career pedagogy as its framework. It uses an innovative and flexible model to serve an under-served population, ages 16-21, in our community. Champion school provides and integrated learning experience for each student that will continually demonstrate how what is learned in the classroom relates to the workplace, their personal growth, and their role in the community and the future.

The Lincoln School specializes in instruction for Special Education students grade 3-12.

The program offers comprehensive Psychological Services, School-wide Behavior Support plan,Vocational Planning/Training and numerous activities that emphasize the development of a sense of community.

The Howard School, an early childhood center, provides a setting where children with disabilities learn in the least restrictive setting. It offers a continuum of service from substantially separate special needs classrooms to integrated classrooms where special needs children learn alongside typically developing children.

The DeKalb County School System (DCSS) is a metropolitan Atlanta public school system located in the second largest county in Georgia. DeKalb, one of the most culturally diverse counties in the nation, has a student enrollment of more than 102,000 students in 143 schools and centers, and 13,285 full-time employees.

All DeKalb schools are dedicated to giving every student the best possible education through an intensive core curriculum and specialized, challenging instructional and career programs. DCSS is striving to become the premier K-12 school system of choice and is constantly improving and refining instruction and management to make it as effective, productive, and economical as possible. To this end, Superintendent Crawford Lewis, Ph. D., continues to lead the school district on a journey towards excellence by sharing his “Blueprint for Premier DeKalb.” The seven strategic pieces to this blueprint are leadership, data analysis to ensure quality decision making, customer service, accountability, access and equity for all students, training for all employees, and unity. With leadership being the capstone of this blueprint, Dr. Lewis has galvanized all employees with the rally cry of “Premier DeKalb … One Direction, All Schools, Every Student!”

DeKalb offers essential instruction in the core curriculum areas, designed with academic rigor to meet the special needs and characteristics of the student. The instructional program is student-centered and content-driven. The SpringboardTM and High Schools That WorkTM model supply the framework for continuous school improvement in our middle and high schools.

The district has many comprehensive programs and initiatives to support student learning. A sampling includes: International Baccalaureate Diploma, Magnet and Theme School Choice programs, Montessori, Advanced Placement and joint enrollment classes, nine Parent Centers, After School Extended Day programs, Driver Education, English Language Learner (ELL) Studies, Gifted Education, DeKalb Online Academy, The Early Intervention Program (EIP) for K-5 and the Remedial Education Program for grades 9-12, and the Dropout Roundup.

All units of study essential to high school graduation in DeKalb County Schools must be earned in grades nine through twelve, with the exception of algebra and world language which may be earned in grade eight. In 2005, there were 5,199 high school completers in DeKalb County School System. Of those, 7.8% earned dual diplomas, 79.4% earned college prep diplomas, and 12.8% earned a vocational diploma. A total of 226 special education diplomas and 641 Certificates of Performance were issued in 2005. Of the district’s 2005 graduates, approximately 38.2% were enrolled in college or postsecondary options by June 1, 2005, with 62% qualifying for the HOPE Scholarship. The graduation classes of 2006 and 2007 may work toward a Technology/Career Prep Diploma, a College Prep Diploma, a College Prep/Technology Career Prep Diploma, or a Special Education Diploma. The diploma choices for the class of 2008 and subsequent years include a Basic Diploma, a Diploma with Specialization, or a Special Education Diploma.

DeKalb’s Career Technical programs offer many opportunities for 11,428 students to refine their talents, skills, and abilities. Career Tech give students the opportunity to learn, grow, and work in industry certified programs in Business Education, Construction, Health Occupations, Graphic Arts, Marketing Education, and Technology Education. These students also participate in numerous JROTC units. Currently, there are nine Navy units, eight Air Force units, and two Army units offering courses such as Aerospace Science, Naval Science, and Army Leadership. These schools offer many student organizations such as DECA, FBLA, FCCLA, FEA, HOSA, TSA, and VICA.

Fernbank Science Center is a science and nature resource center for DeKalb Schools and for the entire community.

The DeKalb County School System has a long history of care and concern for students with special needs and concerns. The internationally recognized Exceptional Education and Support Services Division provides services for these students and their parents that include: Guidance, Counseling, and Mentoring; Gifted and High Achievers Education; GLRS (Georgia Learning Resource System); Parent Mentoring; Prevention/Intervention; Psychological Services; and Social Work.

The Athletic Program of DeKalb County has enjoyed a high level of success. DeKalb prides itself as being the home of champions. There have been a total of 182 state titles won among current schools.

The motto, “The School cannot love apart from the community,” has always symbolized the relationship between the DeKalb County School System and the community it serves. A multitude of businesses and civic organizations serve as active partners to individual schools and as system wide partners through the Partners in Education Foundation Program and various advisory committees that consistently come together to dialogue with and give input to the school system.

Applicants interested in a position with DeKalb County School System must apply online @ http://www.pats.dekalb.k12.ga.us/ . Our central office is located at 3770 N Decatur Road, Decatur GA 30032.

Educational Services of America (ESA) is the nation’s leading provider of K-12 alternative and special education schools and programs for students who are at risk of dropping out and for students with special needs. We partner with more than 240 public school districts in approximately 20 states to serve more than 10,000 students each year in more than 140 schools and programs.

Mission

ESA’s mission is to provide personalized, evidence-based educational services for non-traditional learners in collaboration with families and public school districts.

Structure

As a private company, ESA has access to capital and other resources that allow it to focus on educating students in the most effective, efficient way possible without having to divert attention and resources to ongoing fund raising. It has used its financial strength to grow quality programs through
public school partnerships and expand its platform through strategic acquisitions.

Strategic Service Areas

ESA operates two service divisions—Ombudsman Educational Services and Spectrum Center Schools and Programs.

Many public school districts partner with Ombudsman to provide alternative programs for dropout prevention and credit recovery. Ombudsman students are at risk of not graduating because they may have missed too many school days, lack credits, or have academic challenges or adult responsibilities that keep them from being successful in a traditional school environment. Nationwide, 85 percent of Ombudsman students graduate, earn necessary credits or return to their district school closer to or at grade level. This number is significant, as 100 percent of Ombudsman students are considered at risk when entering the program.

ESA also operates Spectrum Center Schools and Programs. This division serves children and young adults aged five to 22 who have autism spectrum disorders, developmental delays, emotional disturbances, behavioral challenges or other special needs. Spectrum provides supplemental special education to public schools by operating nonpublic schools for students with special needs, as well as special education classrooms within public school buildings.

The growth in each of these service areas reflects a national increase in the demand for alternative and special needs education programming. With increased awareness of special needs, higher diagnosis rates and the heightened interest among public school systems to provide special programs, demand for ESA’s strategic service areas continues to grow.

The student population represents nearly 70 countries with 49 different languages spoken, creating a value-added educational experience and benefit that is above and beyond a basic education.

GRPS proudly offers the largest selection of school choices in all of West Michigan. These choices include: the top performing school in West Michigan (City High-Middle), theme schools (Zoo, Blandford, environmental, creative arts, math/science/technology, college prep, global studies, Montessori, dual immersion), Centers of Innovation (design and construction, health science, engineering and biomedical, business and entrepreneurship, university prep), year round/alternative c calendar schools, Language Centers for English Language Learners, school requiring student uniforms, “community schools” with social, health and mental health services embedded, all day preschool, all day kindergarten, and much more. Ten schools are new, state of the art elementary and middle schools buildings with the latest technology and educational designs to support instruction and learning. Eight of the schools are green-built and five are LEED certified; making GRPS a leader in the state and nation on green built schools.

In November 2008, GRPS was recognized in a Detroit News editorial opinion as a “model” urban school district for its bold and innovative education reforms that are producing significant academic gains. The number of schools meeting Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) has increased from 26 in 2006 to 49 today. Over that same period of time, the number of schools earning a “B” grade or better on the Michigan Education Yes! Report has nearly quadrupled from 7 to 27. Also, over this same period of time, GRPS saw MEAP scores increase in nearly every subject level and grade level for five consecutive years.

The systemic changes and improvements happening throughout the district are being driven by a nationally acclaimed “effort-based learning” model that Superintendent Bernard Taylor, Jr. initiated in 2007 thanks to the generous support of the Doug and Maria DeVos Foundation and a partnership with the University of Pittsburgh’s Institute for Learning.
