One of the oldest districts in St. Louis County, Mo., the Webster Groves School District is the product of a diverse, close-knit and stable community. The district serves students in five neighboring communities in suburban St. Louis: Glendale, Rock Hill, Shrewsbury, Webster Groves and Warson Woods. Student achievement has always ranked far above state and national averages. More than 90 percent of the class of 2010 graduating seniors enrolled in college. Members of that class were awarded more than $14.9 million in scholarships.
The district, now in its 142nd year, has achieved national distinction for a broad curriculum of traditional and innovative programs. For nine years in a row, the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has honored the district by citing it for “Distinction in Performance,” the highest accolade a public school district can receive. Student-teacher ratios are low. During the last several years, virtually every class in each school within the district met the state’s “desirable” standard for class size. In 2008, Webster Groves was named one of the “10 Best Towns for Families” in America by Family Circle magazine, because of its “great schools” and strong community. The area is home to a broad spectrum of socioeconomic groups and cultural interests. Webster University and Eden Theological Seminary are located in the district as are several parochial and private schools.
The district enrolls approximately 4,200 students. It has seven elementary schools, where the average class size is 19. WGSD has one middle school and one sixth grade center, where class sizes are 20 students. It has one high school, which has an average student/teacher ratio of 21 to 1. Eighty percent of the faculty members have master’s degrees or beyond. Teachers have an average of 16 years of experience.
