Success Charter Network, NY

Success Charter Network (SCN) opened its first high-performing public charter school, Harlem Success Academy 1, in 2006.  Three more schools, Harlem Success Academies 2, 3 and 4,opened in 2008.  The network opened three new schools, Harlem Success Academy 5, Bronx Success Academy 1 and Bronx Success Academy 2 in August of 2010.  In the 2010-2011 school year, SCN will serve close to 2,500 children in Harlem and the South Bronx across the seven schools.  SCN’s plan is to open 40 schools in New York City in the next ten years, ensuring that parents in low-income neighborhoods have the same choices for their children that parents in affluent communities have. Success Charter Network’s model includes both a rigorous academic program and a school culture of achievement, parental involvement, continuing improvement, and accountability.

Success_teacherwithscholarsThrough real time evaluation of student achievement data, SCN can rapidly assess whether the curriculum is meeting the needs of the student population and make modifications to ensure all students exceed State standards.  To teach children math, we use the Investigations TERC program in which each curriculum unit focuses on a set of related mathematical ideas, coordinating students’ work in hands-on activities, class discussions, and written activities over a period of several days.  To teach children to read and write, SCN developed Think Literacy, a program created in-house which focuses on long periods of dedicated reading and writing time and maintaining an incredibly high bar for all students while infusing reading and writing with urgency, purpose and joy.  SCN schools also provide social studies, discovery science 5 days a week and enrichment activities including chess, art, dance and physical education.

With the end goal that all SCN students will graduate from college, the school culture includes character education as a part of daily instruction.  We encourage students to act in accordance with the schools’ core  A.C.T.I.O.N.” values:

Excellent behavior is explicitly taught, modeled, expected, and rewarded.  In addition, SCN schools implement enrichment activities so that the schools create not only excellent scholars, butalso well-rounded children.  SCN schools also engage parents in the academic efforts of their children through events such as family reading nights, science fairs and family chess nights.  SCN schools have close to 100% attendance at every family academic event.
