At Harlem Village Academies, we emphatically believe that excellent teachers are the most important element of excellent schools. Therefore we have designed every aspect of our schools to support, respect, develop, and empower our teachers.
OUR SCHOOLS
We operate three schools in Harlem – two middle schools and one high school – and we plan to open several new elementary schools in the future.

OUR RESULTS*
- In 2008, Harlem Village Academy Middle School made history as the first public school in the history of Harlem with 100% of eighth graders proficient on the NY State math exam. They have maintained this 100% track record of achievement for three years in a row.
- In 2009, Harlem Village Academy Leadership scored in the top 2% of all schools in the state in 8th grade math – ahead of many affluent, suburban districts like Scarsdale.
- Over the course of the last five years, 99% of all students who entered our schools at level 1 (functional illiteracy) have improved to level 2 (basic) or 3 (reading proficiency) within one year.
- 98% of seventh graders at Harlem Village Academy Leadership passed the New York State ELA test, making them the highest scoring non-selective school in all of Manhattan.
- Since the inception of the New York City school grading system, all Harlem Village Academies schools have consistently earned a grade of “A” in every category and “A” overall. All of our students are expected to earn an advanced Regents diploma upon graduation, and we are making strong progress toward that goal.
- 100% of our high school students passed the Integrated Algebra Regents exam, 97% of sophomores passed the Geometry Regents exam and 94% passed the Global History Regents exam. 87% of students passed the Chemistry Regents. In comparison, only 28% of students in the local community school district earned an advanced Regents degree

OUR VALUES
In building our schools, we select talented teachers and team members who share our values.
Learning
- Our children always come first. The well-being and achievement of children is our highest priority, and all our decisions are based on what’s best for them. We put children’s needs above our interests.
- We are passionate about learning. We’re continually developing ourselves as educators. We observe each other’s lessons, study pedagogical research, plan together, share ideas, and talk all the time about teaching.
- The most revered individuals in our community are master teachers. We hold the utmost respect for a lifelong teaching career.

Entrepreneurial

|
- We love what we do! We are passionate and driven. We work for social justice with seriousness and a sense of urgency. We run to meetings. Our work is a sacred calling.
- We hold ourselves accountable for results. We take pride in our personal accountability for the achievement of our children. We do not believe in blame or excuses, just results and hard work.
- Kaizen. Everyone is entrusted and empowered to continually improve everything. We can’t stand mediocrity. We relentlessly pursue excellence.
- If we ever become a bureaucracy, please shoot us. We banish roadblocks and minimize bureaucratic nonsense. Everyone here is an entrepreneur. When a problem arises, we figure out a solution – and implement it quickly. We live for people with a work ethic who execute well and get the job done.
|
Community
- We radiate positive energy. We energize each other with positive talk, positive attitudes, and positive actions. We don’t tolerate even a little whining, complaining, negativity, arrogance, or gossip; it does not bring sunshine to our day.
- No, I love you more. We are a warm and loving community. We spend a lot of time together, so we want to have fun!
- Helloooooo. Real communication happens here. With shared values and our hearts in the right place, we work through disagreements and difficult conversations. Our open communication builds happy relationships. So get off email. Walk down the hall or pick up the phone for a constructive conversation.
