All teachers have an obligation to strengthen their knowledge of subject matter and instructional strategies, as well as to enhance their understanding of students as learners. As a new teacher, you can start with the basic understanding of your school district’s curricular goals, and the state’s standards for student achievement.

  • continuing education courses
  • professional development
  • honors and awards

The attitudes and attributes that good teachers bring with them to the classroom include:

  • knowledge on subject matter
  • good communi-cation skills, including listening
  • patience
  • motivation
  • good time management skills

3. TEACHER PRACTICES

The ways in which teachers interact with students and the teaching strategies they use to accomplish specific teaching tasks:

  • student assessment
  • clearly defined learning objectives
  • expectations for student performance student evaluation

4. TEACHER EFFECTIVENESS

Effectiveness is determined by which the students’ learning experience was productive. Evaluations could be based on:

  • peer review
  • self-rating
  • student performance results on standardized tests
