Denver Public Schools (DPS) is one of the largest urban school districts in the nation, serving over 78,000 students with a mission of providing all students with the opportunity to achieve the knowledge and skills necessary to become contributing citizens in our society. The DPS district is comprised of 152 schools, each as different and unique as the student population it serves.
DPS is driven to instill innovation and differentiated support to meet the needs of the racially/ethnically, socioeconomically, and linguistically diverse student population: 75% of the student population is ethnically diverse; 70% percent of the district’s students qualify for free and reduced lunch; nearly 40% speak Spanish; nearly 20% are English language learners; and over 130 different languages are spoken in students’ homes.
Nothing is more essential to a great education system than great educators. With over 13,000 employees and nearly 5,000 teachers and administrators, the district’s focus on student achievement is clear. DPS is on the forefront of education reform and has shown significant gains in student achievement driven by the implementation of ProComp – an innovative pay for performance structure that rewards teachers for student achievement gains – robust new teacher and ongoing professional development.
